Radio is also extremely important in Togolese life. It’s the primary way people get their news, from events happening around town to official announcements such as the date schools will open again for the year.
One Saturday morning in Kara, I had the opportunity to speak about English learning on my friend Charles’ radio program:

Later that evening, we met with some other English teachers and a Zoe, a Peace Corps volunteer for “English Lovers Night”: a chance for people to meet and practice the language informally. The event was held at the gigantic Palais de Congress:

A major yearly event for the University of Kara is the “Slam Festival”- an open-mic night of sorts where students share original writings and songs. My team from the embassy served as judges:
