Precarious Life

One thing that never gets old about driving around Togo is the sight of a massive vehicle of some sort that has been weighed down with an equally massive load of objects, animals, or humans. I never get tired of wondering how everything is tied up, why nothing falls, and what it must be like to ride on top of one as it rumbles down the highway.

Many seem to be carrying loads of wares to sell at the market:

Why make trips when you’ve got bungees?

Others serve as luggage platforms for long trips:

Note another common sight: sellers of fruit and other goods at each red-light opportunity

So many give rides to still-alive creatures. What a (confusing) rush that must be.

to market, to market…

Still others give their loads some human supervision:

There’s more than sacks up there…

Again, amazing.
